Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are Peer Support Workers?

Peer support workers are trained staff who use their own lived experience with mental health or addiction to support others who are facing similar challenges.

They offer understanding, hope, and practical support based on shared experience. Peer support workers are not therapists or clinicians. Their role is to walk alongside people, reduce isolation, and help them navigate services and recovery at their own pace.

When can I meet with a Peer Support Worker?

Monday to Friday - 11am-6pm (by appointment). Hours may vary.

Will my conversations with Peer Support Workers be confidential?

Confidentiality means that what you share with us is kept private. Conversations with peer support are confidential with the exception of a few situations where we may need to share information to keep someone safe or to follow the law.

This can happen if:

  • There is a risk of serious harm to the person or to someone else

  • A child or youth may be at risk of abuse or neglect

  • There is an immediate safety concern that requires emergency support

In these cases, we only share the information that is necessary, and we try to talk with you about it whenever possible.

Is there a waitlist?

There is currently no waitlist.

Are Peer Support Workers counsellors?

No. Peer support workers are not counsellors, therapists, or doctors.

They are trained staff with lived experience who offer understanding, encouragement, and practical support based on shared experience. Their role is to listen, support, and help people find their own path forward, not to provide therapy or clinical treatment.

Peer support workers can work alongside counsellors and other professionals as part of a care team.

Do I have to have been a patient at Waypoint to receive Peer Support?

No! You can access peer support by self referral within the community out of our  PCFC office in Midland, ON.
