A steering committee was formed at the old psychiatric hospital (then known as Mental Health Centre Penetanguishene) to explore creating a “Patient Council"
The first “Patient/Consumer Council” was chosen, with members from both inside the hospital and the community. This marked the official start of the council.
The group officially became an organization called the Patient/Client & Family Council (PCFC). They set up a board of directors and hired staff, all of who have lived experience with mental health or were family members of someone who did. After 2004, PCFC worked mostly inside the hospital, sharing the views of clients and families, giving feedback on care and policies, and speaking up for improvements at what was then called the Mental Health Centre Penetanguishene.
The hospital was transferred from the Ontario government to a new organization and was renamed Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care. This change made it a public hospital with its own identity and leadership.
A new, modern building called the “Atrium” opened at Waypoint. This marked a new chapter for the hospital and gave PCFC more ways to support both people staying in the hospital and clients from all over Ontario.
PCFC has grown beyond the hospital and now works in the community across Midland, Penetanguishene, and the North Simcoe Muskoka region. We offer peer support, education, advocacy, and a strong voice for people using services and their families.
